Recognizing three exceptional projects.
In its eighth year, the independently organized Austin Green Awards is Austin’s first recognition
program to specifically highlight outstanding accomplishments in the broad arena of sustainable design and
innovation, recognizing forward facing design strategies that respond to rapidly evolving environmental,
social, and health imperatives. Committed to set a high bar for sustainable events, the organizers
implemented procedures to achieve zero waste.
The three Awardees of the 2023 Austin Green Awards were announced at the Austin Green Awards Celebration on October 25th at the Sunset Room. In his introductory remarks, Greg Arcangeli, representing Headline Sponsor Austin Energy Green Building, positioned aspirations in the context of the urgent need for action: “Austin has long served as a beacon of innovation, operating the first and oldest whole green building rating system in the nation. We’re also a community that cares deeply for the natural beauty and resources that surround us, which are the setting for the cultural institutions and experiences that unify us. And as Austin experiences unrelenting growth, we must consider no longer just conserving what we have, but actively crafting a future with sustainability at its core. These awards are an occasion to celebrate the fruits of such collaborations and to highlight goals, practices, and outcomes that all of us here can carry forward in a shared commitment that every building, park, and initiative reflects our love for this city, its natural treasures, and its people.”
Greg’s remarks were followed by the evening’s keynote from Huston-Tillotson University’s President and CEO Dr. Melva K. Wallace. She opened with a captivating story about a “mystical place called Austin” and welcomed all to visit the Huston-Tillotson campus. To help reimagine HT as it hits the reset button on its current campus, she solicited “the best ideas from the most creative and crazy innovators” and provocatively asked, “how crazy can we go? how weird can we get?" Dr. Wallace ended with an inspirational message of the collective opportunity to make our city and world a better place: “I’m amongst those who are never satisfied with yesterday’s success; who do not sleep well knowing that there’s more to do. So, I say to you, why not do it again...let’s do it again together, this time with your new partner, your HBCU. ...Let us take with us a spirit of innovation and passion for a green, more sustainable future. One where you find an opportunity to do even more through your time, your talents, for your treasure.”
